Fears & Phobias
Fear is one of the most primitive stress responses; a natural instinct that arises to safeguard you from real and imminent emotional or physical danger and harm whilst phobia is excessive fear or persistent anxiety related to specific objects or situations to an unreasonable extent that is out of proportion to the actual danger they present. In the state of fear and phobia, our mind is on high alert and all chemicals in the body are working overtime to protect us hence overcoming a fear takes a lot of courage and practice.
Various Types of Fears & Phobias
It is not uncommon to develop certain fears & phobias over a period of time. According to the DSM, specific phobias typically fall within 5 general categories:
-
Fears related to animals (spiders, dogs, insects)
-
Fears related to the natural environment (heights, thunder, darkness)
-
Fears related to blood, injury, or medical issues (injections, broken bones, falls)
-
Fears related to specific situations (flying, riding an elevator, driving)
-
Other (choking, loud noises, drowning)
These categories encompass an infinite number of specific objects and situations. There’s no official list of phobias. With anxiety disorders we can experience panic attacks in certain situations which can be extremely distressing and uncomfortable. Our behaviours are the product of thoughts and emotions therefore at Ashmir by Sabahat Ahmed, we use a combination of NLP & NNRT techniques to distort the neuropathways causing fears & phobias followed by hypnotherapy to eliminate the thoughts causing fears at the subconscious level of the mind. Some of the most common fears & phobias we address are:
Fear of Flying
Aero-phobics have a hard time reconciling their fear with safety statistics even though they recognize that their phobias is not logical. It is important to understand the triggers to which aero-phobics have become sensitized. The list of triggers is long and includes thoughts, images, sensations, memories, turbulence, take-off, landings, terrorism, crashes, social anxieties, or just being too far from home. Some people fear fire, illness spread through the air system, using the toilets, or violence on a plane. Others have a “bad feeling” about their flight, afraid that their anxieties will somehow predict a catastrophe. Someone who also fears heights might become terrified thinking about flying many miles above the ground. For a long time, CAM techniques such as NLP and hypnotherapy has been used globally to eliminate fears and phobias associated with flying and improve quality of experience. We test the effectiveness by taking a 'field trip' with you after the session.
Fear of Presenting & Public Speaking
Anxiety and Depression Association of America says that public speaking is said to be the biggest fear reported by many American adults, topping flying, financial ruin, sickness, and even death.
It is common to experience stage fright or social anxiety and feel nervous when preparing to speak or perform in front of an audience but when this feeling gets out of control, consequences can be detrimental to mental and physical health. It takes a toll on self-confidence and causes low self-esteem resulting in lost opportunities or ill health.
To overcome such fears & phobias, it is important to address the negative perceptions, beliefs, thoughts, images, and predictions associated with public speaking, presentations or social interactions so using our tailored techniques, we help you uncover and eliminate fears at the conscious, subconscious and unconscious level of the mind so you can overcome vulnerability in any situation, and take control of your life.
